The effects of adoption on children and parents (both adoptive and birth) can be generally grouped into seven areas: loss, rejection, guilt and shame, grief, identity, intimacy, and mastery/control. To learn more about these issues and how they affect each group, we recommend starting by reading "Lifelong Issues in Adoption" and then visiting our online Adoption Products for books on the emotional impact of adoption.

I recently got engaged to my Fiance who I've been with since my daughter turned 3. She is now 10. Her biological family on her fathers side does not deal with my child since her gpop passed in 2008. I can count on one hand how many times her father have seen her or try to put the effort in with dealing with her. She calls my Fiance Dad and have been doing so since the age of 5. He spends time with her he helps with school projects homework he attends teacher night at school picks up reportcards the list goes on. I can't give too much detail about the other one because he doesn't do anything. All I can say is the couple times he did come to get her he was always taking her to a different female house or leaving her with the grandmom etc. He's only giving her about two bday parties and he's really just not into her. In the 4th year of my relationship my daughter asked if her name could be changed because she's the only one without the lastname. We all discussed it and I'm going thru with #1
